The death of Captain Jack Sparrow seemed both inevitable and impossible, as the iconic character is the soul of the megalithic cash-cow, but Depp himself has long lost his family-friendly sheen.

An incredibly messy divorce from ex-wife Amber Heard, in which Depp was accused of domestic violence, permanently soured the beloved actor’s image in the eyes of the public. Depp then settled a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against his former business managers, The Management Group, after accusing them of fraud and financial mismanagement, which added to the impression that Depp’s life was in chaos.

Not to mention, a vocal segment of the Fantastic Beasts fanbase has been questioning the casting of Johnny Depp as the dark wizard Grindelwald ever since the actor’s role was revealed, and continue to voice the opinion that his presence is problematic.

An interview with Rolling Stone portrayed Depp as something like a real-life, rambling Jack Sparrow, minus the charisma and razor-sharp wit. Depp, known for idolizing perpetually intoxicated icons such as Keith Richards and Hunter S. Thomson, seemed to be following in their uneven footsteps.

And in a strange parallel to Depp’s descent, the last Pirates movie, Dead Men Tell No Tales, saw Jack Sparrow devolve from cunning trickster into perpetually confused nincompoop.

It was a depressingly realistic depiction of an aging alcoholic, but far removed from the character’s original incarnation, who seemed to be strategically playing the fool, secretly one step ahead of everyone else. Throughout the sequels, the character has slowly become a caricature, shifting from shrewd drunken boxer to helpless drunk.

So, in a way, it’s not surprising that Disney looks to be dropping the actor and starting from scratch. But Jack Sparrow was undoubtedly the reason people love this franchise in the first place, and why these movies continue to make an obscene amount of money at the box office.

His presence is why we all continue to show up at the cinema, despite the fact that the franchise descended into mediocrity immediately after the original entry. Pirates of the Caribbean is nothing without Jack Sparrow, the rock star of the seas.

It’s worth noting that the success of the original Pirates was almost an accident. Who would have thought that a franchise based on a theme-park ride would be so entertaining? That pirates, who haven’t been cool since Star Wars reduced them to pop culture relics, would be so appealing to the public?

Hilariously, the higher-ups at Disney didn’t understand Depp’s original performance, at all. They were reportedly terrified that Depp was intentionally imbuing the character with homosexual traits, and that the performance was going to sabotage their film by frightening away conservative families.

But Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ended up being a perfect blockbuster, in my mind, right up there with Indiana Jones and Back to the Future. It’s an infinitely rewatchable popcorn classic, and the blissful memory of that movie is what keeps us coming back to the fun-but-forgettable sequels.

Thus, in order to successfully reboot, Disney might have to change the tone completely, hopefully without using the phrase “dark and gritty,” or find another immensely charismatic actor who can make pirates cool again, without doing a Johnny Depp impersonation.

Because it wasn’t really the setting, or the story (though those were amazing) that sold us on this franchise, it was the romanticization of the rebel. That tattooed, dreadlocked mess of a man who always managed to evade the consequence of his actions, a fun-filled manchild, without the depressing connotations of that word.

Jack Sparrow was rather like a modern-day Han Solo, minus the moral compass. Somebody is going to have to step up to that role of rogue rebel, but completely reinterpret it and make it their own. Disney needs another actor who isn’t scared to do their own thing.

Performances like that are tough to produce, even when you have Disney’s resources. Remember, this is the company that almost canned Jack Sparrow for being too flamboyant; I’m curious to see if they can repeat the ridiculous success of the world’s first, and only, lucrative theme-park franchise.
